About Ocean Plaza Beach Resort
The Ocean Plaza Beach Resort is a Tybee Island, Georgia hotel independently owned by a privately held Georgia corporation controlled by the Spirides family. The Spirides family has operated businesses in Tybee Island's downtown commercial district for the past 70 years, and they have owned the Ocean Plaza Beach Resort property since 1967. Some of the businesses that they operated over the years include the legendary Tybrisa Pier and Pavilion, the Hotel Tybee, the world's first Days Inn, Ocean Terrace Cottages, the Sands Motel, the Veranda Motel & Restaurant, and the modern day Ocean Plaza Beach Resort and Dolphin Reef Oceanfront Restaurant & Bar. Third generation hotelier Harry Spirides is currently the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of the company. Mr. Spirides has worked in every conceivable job in the company over the past 30+ years. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Administration from Florida State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Mercer University. A military veteran, Mr. Spirides proudly served this country as a U.S. Coast Guard officer. He served 3 years active duty and 8 years reserve duty. He separated from the service with an honorable discharge in 2008. He has two daughters.
Harry Spirides' most notable accomplishment at this Savannah beach hotel thus far has been the design, construction, and opening in 2000 of the multi-million dollar Dolphin Reef Oceanfront Restaurant and Bar. Mr. Spirides' future goal is an ambitious renovation and expansion of the resort property in an attempt to make it look similar to the legendary Hotel Tybee with its majestic Mediterranean Revival architecture which once stood on the same site where the Ocean Plaza Resort stands today. Through this redevelopment Mr. Spirides would also build a modern convention center, an entertainment complex, a fitness center, and a multi-level parking garage, all of which he says the island's downtown commercial district greatly needs in order to accommodate existing demand and to remain competitive with other resort destinations.
